The King Reigns Over All-Star Voting
The second round of fan returns came in for 2020 All-Star Voting on Thursday along with a new frontrunner. Los Angeles Lakers’ Lebron James has taken over as the leading vote-getter (3,359,871 votes), passing previous leaders Luka Doncic of the Western Conference and Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Eastern Conference.
James, Antetokounmpo, Doncic, and Anthony Davis are the only four players to amass over three-million fan votes after the first two rounds of voting, while the familiar names of Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving seem to be homing in on solidifying their own spots. There are still some head-scratchers on this list, including LA fan-favorite Alex Caruso, who is currently sitting in 6th out of the Western Conference Guards. Celtics’ Tacko Fall is another name from the East that is gaining massive tallies, as he is currently 6th out of all Eastern Frontcourt players. Expect this to normalize as soon as final input comes from current players and media, but for the time being, enjoy the entertainment value those underdogs bring to the table. We could very well see a repeat of captains from 2019, as LeBron and Giannis won their respective conferences and assembled their teams. Team LeBron wound up victorious in Charlotte, beating team Giannis 178-164.
While we are still only in the fan voting portion of the All-Star selections, the rosters are starting to take shape a little more after one more week of filling out ballots. Fans account for 50 percent of the vote in determining the 10 starters, while current NBA players and the media each account for 25 percent. Voting will conclude on Monday, January 20th, so make sure to get those votes in!
The 2020 NBA All-Star Game will take place at the United Center in Chicago on Sunday, February 16th.
