‘Survivor: Edge of Extinction’ Episode 8 Betting Odds

  • This is the 38th season for CBS’s reality show.
  • ‘Survivor’ was one of the early pioneers of the reality TV genre.
  • ‘Survivor: Edge of Extinction’ Episode 8 airs April 3 at 8:00 PM Eastern.

We *finally* have two contestants actually eliminated from Survivor: Edge of Extinction. Keith Sowell and Wendy Diaz are both gone (presumably) for good. More about that in a moment. That leaves a total of 16 ‘eligible contestants’. Four are on ‘Extinction Island’ with the rest on the main island.

In the previous episode we had something of a shakeup in the contestant ranks. The six desperate souls from ‘Extinction Island’ competed in a challenge with the winner returning to the game on the main island. Rick Devens won the contest which involved an obstacle course. Everyone else was given the offer to return to ‘Extinction Island’ and await another chance to return to the game. All five initially accepted but once they returned to the island Keith Sowell and Wendy Diaz ‘tapped out’ by raising the mast and left the game. As the reality TV columnist for the Toronto Sun put it, they quit because they were ‘in fear of returning to the desperate conditions on Extinction Island.’ This also is a good place to quote myself from last week re: the ‘desperate conditions’ on Extinction Island:

‘Extinction Island’ was getting crowded with a population of six though the impending tribal merge and the inference that at least one of the voted off contestants will rejoin the game could change that. The contestants are still complaining about the conditions on Extinction Island–Aubry Bracco is the latest calling the desolatepurgatorio ‘a disaster’. It’s definitely not Sandals All Inclusive Jamaican Resort–there are no buffets or bars. The upside is that you don’t have to a deal with a bunch of greased up douchebags from New Jersey or swinging couples from flyover country. Here’s a still from Episode 5/6–figure out how to catch and cook some seafood and it looks like a place I’d be pretty content for at least a few weeks. That might be why I’m not suitable to be a reality TV show contestant:

Over at Entertainment Weekly, here’s their take on the two contestants tapping out:

Now, I know you think I’m probably gonna go all old school Jeff Probst and throw these two quitters down the same way Probst threw down Osten’s torch. But I’m not going to do that. I’m not angry or anything. I’m just confused. In one scene, we see Keith reaching for the heavens to thank God upon hearing that he could go back to Extinction Island and still have a chance to win his favorite TV show and the million dollars that goes along with it. In his next scene, he’s asking to leave. In one scene we see Big Wendy hugging everyone and celebrating like she just released every single chicken in the entire world. In her next scene, she’s all get me the hell out of here!

Seperately at EW the aforementioned Wendy Diaz comes up with some convoluted logic to claim that she ‘didn’t quit’.

I never gave up, and I never quit. At the time, it seemed completely optional to either stay or leave considering we had already been voted off. I never ran out of game-play but I saw The Edge as a place to seek revenge, see-through unfinished business, to prove something. At that point, I had ZERO regrets with the game I played.

A couple of procedural notes–depending on where you look in the Survivor: Edge of Extinction fan universe you’ll notice that thanks to the ‘double episode’ earlier this year there’s some discrepancy in episode numbering. Some count the double episode as one episode making the current one Episode 7. Others (myself included) count the two hours of the ‘double episode’ separately making this Episode 8. Also, the prop about a contestant quitting/removed due to injury has been reworded to apply only to main game contestants. What happens on Extinction Island stays on Extinction Island….
