New York Stakes Headlines Friday Card At Belmont Park

  • Friday’s racing card at Belmont Park will be headlined by the $750,000 USD Grade 1 New York Stakes for fillies and mares four years old and up.
  • The New York Stakes is one of five graded stakes races on the Friday card.
  • Saturday brings the huge racing day culminated by the Belmont Stakes.

The first two legs of the Triple Crown–the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes–each have a big race headlining the card on the Friday before. The Kentucky Derby’s Friday ‘warm up’ is the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks for three year old fillies. The Friday before the Preakness Stakes is headlined by the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan for three year old fillies. These are among the premier races of the season for three year old female horses.

The Belmont does things a bit differently. The big race for three year old female horses on the weekend of the Belmont Stakes is actually on the undercard–that would be the $500,000 Grade 1 Acorn Stakes which goes a mile on the dirt track. The Acorn will be Race 3 on the Saturday Belmont card–one of eight Grade 1 stakes events. The Saturday Belmont card is arguably the biggest non-Breeders’ Cup racing day of the year.

The emphasis on the Belmont Stakes undercard doesn’t mean that Friday is devoid of good racing. It is a pretty impressive lineup in its own right, with five graded stakes events including the $750,000 USD Grade 1 New York for older fillies and mares (four years old and up) going a mile and a quarter on the inner turf track. It is the penultimate race–Race 10–on a racing card at Belmont Park with a first race post time of 12:50 PM Eastern on Friday, June 10. In this post, we’ll look at the lineup for Friday’s Belmont Park racing:
