  • Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter has received a lifetime ban from the NBA.
  • Porter was determined to have compromised the integrity of NBA games for personal gain.
  • He was also found to have placed bets on NBA games, including betting against his own team.

The NBA has imposed a lifetime ban on Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter following serious breaches of the league’s gambling policies. This decisive action came after an investigation revealed that Porter engaged in multiple prohibited activities, including sharing confidential information with sports bettors, deliberately limiting his play in games to affect betting outcomes, and directly betting on NBA games.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the critical importance of maintaining the integrity of the sport, stating, “There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams, and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.”

The investigation disclosed that Porter had compromised the integrity of a game on March 20, by revealing his health status to known bettors and intentionally underperforming, which influenced a significant $80,000 bet made by an associate. Although this bet was frozen and not paid out due to the suspicious circumstances, it underscored the gravity of Porter’s actions.

Moreover, from January to March, Porter was found to have placed 13 bets on NBA games, including bets against his own team, none of which involved games he played in. These bets ranged widely in size, leading to total net winnings of $21,965.

The case came to light thanks to the vigilance of licensed sports betting operators and monitoring partners, highlighting the effectiveness of legal sports betting markets in identifying and flagging unusual betting patterns.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) praised the NBA’s swift and firm response, illustrating the critical role of regulated betting environments in safeguarding sports integrity. The AGCO noted, “This serious case of alleged insider betting and match-fixing was identified because regulated markets, like Ontario’s, require online gaming companies and independent integrity monitors to actively monitor and report suspicious betting.”

The ongoing NBA investigation could lead to further revelations, while the Ontario Provincial Police’s Investigation and Enforcement Bureau continues to review the case, ensuring comprehensive scrutiny and enforcement of sports betting integrity.
