‘Big Brother’ Season 21 Betting Odds Episode 14

  • This is the 21st season for CBS’s reality show.
  • ‘Big Brother’ is a spin-off of a Dutch TV series of the same name.
  • ‘Big Brother’ Season 21 Episode 14 airs July 25 at 8:00 PM Eastern.

The good news from the latest episode of Big Brother is that they’ve put an end to the lame Survivor ‘Extinction Island’ plot device ripoff ‘Camp Comeback’. It’s still not quite clear why Big Brother co-opted one of the most universally reviled reality show plot devices in history for their 21st season in the first place. People hated when it was used on Survivor and they still hate it now. The reason for the hatred is obvious–it eliminates the grim finality of elimination aka ‘one of the only reasons to watch reality TV’. Much of the drama within the context of the show deals with contestants plotting, scheming and otherwise arranging the elimination of other contestants. If the contestants aren’t really eliminated–even if they’re labeled as such in the nomenclature of the show–there’s no real point in watching.

The end result of all of the ‘Camp Comeback’ nonsense was that the Jim Ross-esque Cliff Hogg III was evicted and then won his way back into the competition. He now has the dubious distinction of joining Victor Arroyo in Season 18 as the second person in Big Brother history to re-enter the game twice in the same season. No doubt that will be added to his resume. The remaining residents of ‘Camp Comeback’–David Alexander, Ovi Kabir and Kimi Fakunele–were booted from the house (presumably) for good. They’re as gone as anyone gets in reality TV circa 2019. Hogg is now going to shake things up a bit as he’s become HOH for the first time this season.

I get that people don’t watch Big Brother for the continuity but lest we forget David Alexander was never ‘officially’ eliminated. He was ‘banished’ in Episode 1 and relegated to ‘Camp Comeback’ ever since. He’s now been summarily removed from the game despite not actually being eliminated. He wasn’t really happy about this and when he was interviewed by Julie said he ‘never got to truly play the game’. His gripe is a legitimate one but Julie ushered him off like host Doug Llewelyn used to do on the classic ‘Judge Wapner’ era of The People’s Court. It doesn’t really matter, of course, and it’s not like there’s an international sanctioning body for reality TV like FIFA in soccer. It does serve to further erode the ‘need for order in an imaginary universe’ that reality television has been predicated upon since it’s origin. We discussed this last week but reality TV producers may have given up on this concept entirely.
