Patrick Mahomes Signs “Mega Extension” with Chiefs worth $500M
There’s really only one thing to say about what happened to Patrick Mahomes today: his life has been changed forever.
Now one year removed from his first league MVP award and five months after leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win, the new face of the league has CASHED in. After many hints this afternoon regarding a long term contract, ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news Monday that the Chiefs have signed their QB to a 10-year, half-billion-dollar deal. The contract is reportedly the richest deal in NFL history. Mahomes’ 10-year extension is worth $477 million (and can reach up to $503 million through incentives) with a $140 million injury guarantee.
It’s certainly not an everyday sight to see a contract extension of this length, but it’s also foolish to not take care of a quarterback who to see a quarterback win league and Super Bowl MVPs before his 25th birthday.
The 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mahomes was entering the final original year of his four-year, $16.4 million rookie contract. The Chiefs did pick up his fifth-year option back in April and have worked it into the new deal.
The Chiefs now hopeful long-time QB joins the list of the NFL’s highest-paid players…ever. Over the past two years, Mahomes has completed nearly 66% of his passes with 76 touchdowns and 18 interceptions during the regular season.
This past postseason, Mahomes threw 10 touchdowns against just two interceptions (including an insane first-half comeback against the Houston Texans) while leading Kansas City to a fourth-quarter comeback win over the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. The sky is certainly clear and bright for the young gunslinger, who is now most certainly the face of the league for the next decade alongside Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.
