There was a time when So You Think You Can Dance was a serious powerhouse of the reality television genre. That was before the digital revolution transformed network TV forever and both the reality show genre and SYTYCD has had trouble adjusting to the 21st Century ecosystem. A better way of putting it–the digital revolution has completely obliterated the entertainment world in which the shows originally premiered. At the height of its popularity, SYTYCD brought in 10 million viewers a week. Now it’s somewhere in the low two million viewership. If there is a positive from this season’s viewership it would be the nice bump the show’s ratings experienced when the live episodes began. The last pre-recorded broadcast on August 5, 2019 had a 0.4 rating and a 1.95 million viewership. The first two live episodes have brought in 0.5 ratings with 2.25 and 2.30 million viewers. The bad news is that the first two live shows from Season 15 drew a 0.6 rating with 2.49 and 2.59 million viewers. Overall, the ratings/viewership for Season 16 are down by 17% and 20% respectively.
SYTYCD was life or death to return for another season and there’s no guarantee that they’ll get another reprieve to return next year. In today’s broadcast landscape there’s nothing that is ‘a lock’ to aggregate a large mainstream audience. Most networks are happy to get a few million viewers in the same place at the same time every week and that’s precisely what reality TV delivers. That being said, the prevailing wisdom is that this could be the final season for the long running dance show. The TVSeriesFinale.com website is of the opinion that as soon as FOX finds a suitable replacement that SYTYCD will be taken out of its misery.
